Bryan Pearce (1929 - 2007)
Bryan Pearce was born in 1929 in St Ives and although severely limited in learning by phenylketonuria in his twenties was encouraged by his mother to begin to paint. He attended Leonard Fuller's St Ives School
of Art and received support and encouragement from prominent St Ives artists, notably Peter Lanyon, who recognised his early promise. Starting tentatively in watercolour by 1957 he had developed enough to move to oils and critics were saying that "his pictures have a simplicity of vision and technique that is almost breathtaking". Despite his special needs Bryan Pearce had developed a method of painting that enabled him to depict his local surroundings, the streets, the harbour, the churches, the boats and sea with an intimacy that conveyed to the viewer his own delight in his home town. Mary Pearce was to devote the rest of her life overseeing Bryan's artistic career, a role later taken on by trustees thus leaving Bryan himself to think only of his painting. In later years Bryan Pearce's works were to sell as soon as they appeared but a number of his paintings were turned into very limited edition silkscreen prints and several lithographs were also produced. Following his death the Bryan Pearce Estate gave a large collection of his work to the Royal Cornwall Museum and his largest painting Penzance Harbour (all round) oil on board 20.5" x 60.5" sold at auction for a hammer price of £39,000.
