Wilhelmina Barns Graham (1912 - 2004)
Wilhelmina Barns Graham was one of the stalwarts of post war artistic activities in St Ives. Born in Fife she moved to St Ives in 1940 and began to meet both the older established artists including Borlase Smart and the newly settled modernists which included Ben Nicholson, Barbara Hepworth and Naum Gabo. She became a member of the St Ives Society of Artists breaking away in 1949 with a group of more progressive abstract artists to become a founder member of the Penwith Society of Arts. She travelled regularly to Switzerland, France, Italy and Spain and her work combined an abstract vision with and drawing heavily upon inspirations from the landscape. In later years she split her time between St Ives and her native Scotland and received honorary doctorates from the Universities of St Andrews, Plymouth, Exeter and Falmouth. She was elected an honorary member of The Royal Scottish Academy in 1999 and awarded a CBE in 2001. In 1987 she had established The Barns-Graham Charitable Trust which she was to bequeath her entire estate to with the aim of advancing the knowledge of her life and works and to support and inspire art and art history students.
