was founded in 1926 by Michael Cardew on the site of a pottery dating back to the early 1800's. It is thus one of the longest running craft potteries in the country.
Cardew had trained under Bernard Leach and his ambition was to make pottery for everyday use, that everyone could afford in the 17th century slipware tradition.
|With the help of locals Elijah Comfort and the very young Sydney Tustin just 13, he set about restarting the pottery that had been closed since the War. In 1936 Ray Finch joined Winchcombe and three years later Cardew left to set up Wenford Bridge Pottery in Cornwall leaving Finch to run Winchcombe. Ray Finch died in 2012 at the age of 97. Today the main day to day running of the pottery is down to Mike Finch, Ray's son.|
